Val Verde

Val Verde (バルベルデ Baruberude?) is a small country in South America run by a military regime. It is part of the backstory of Chris Yukine, where she lost her parents to war and was captured and enslaved for six years, before being rescued by the United Nations. Val Verde is always in a state of political instability, and despite being a small country, has frequently been faced with large crises and threats.

History

The current dictatorship of Val Verde has been in control for a long time, forcing their citizens to live under harsh conditions. Skirmishes with rebel groups have sporadically been repeated over the years without much change.

Eight years prior to season 1, as part of a non-government volunteer organization war relief program, Masanori and Sonnet M. Yukine, along with the young Chris, visited Val Verde, a republic that had recently suffered from a coup and suspended all diplomatic relations with other countries. The Yukine family entered the country through Guatemala and put on public music performances in different places while traveling, with the ultimate goal of lending aid to refugees. At first, the family traveled along with delegates from the United Nations, including Sonia Virena, who shared the dream of Chris' parents and acted as an older sister to the young Chris. However, the Yukine family eventually got trapped by the expanding front-lines of the ongoing war and became isolated from their organization. The Yukine family were later declared missing.

Shortly after that, outside sources confirmed that Masanori and Sonnet had died in a terrorist bombing, with terrorists managing to sneak the bomb into their camp due to Sonia's carelessness. Meanwhile, Chris was separated from Sonia, captured by the terrorists, and sold into slavery. Chris would remain a child slave trapped in Val Verde for the next six years until she was saved by the intervention of the United Nations, only to fall into the hands of her next abuser, Finé, upon her return to Japan.

During AXZ, when it became proven that the military was using Alca-Noise, the United Nations decided upon an armed intervention. As a result, S.O.N.G. was mobilized.

The moral and combat skill of Val Verde's troops are incredibly low when compared to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and are more like “immature soldiers” that are often described in fiction. This gang of delinquents has no regard for rules nor any sort of respect for orders or the chain of command. They were not considered dangerous until they were supplied black art technology which instantly found them as a major threat in the eyes of the rest of the world.[1]

Trivia

  • Val Verde is not a real country in South America. It was created by Hollywood writer and producer Steven E. de Souza when his stories require a South- or Central-American locale that will not cause legal or diplomatic problems. The location first appeared in his 1985 film Commando. Since then, many other creators have used Val Verde in their works, usually either as a direct link or reference to Souza's work.[2]
  • "Val Verde" translates to "Green Valley" in many Latin-based languages.
